Today is 92nd Birth Anniversary of legendary filmmaker "Satyajit Ray" and to honor the legacy of his film making, Google India has come up with Black & White doodle depicting a scene of his first film, Pather Panchali (from the Apu trilogy). In reccent times, we have seen so many creative doodles but, this one is extremely applaudable as it commemorates the birth anniversary of Mr Ray by throwing a light on the history of Indian Cinema.
Satyajit Ray was born on May 2, 1921, at Calcutta (now Kolkata) in a family which was quite respected in the field of arts and literature. Film and documentary making were his early age love and he crossed all the boundaries to bring his love into the life. He attracted towards film making after watching Vittorio De Sica’s 1948 movie "Bicycle Thieves" and meeting with French filmmaker Jean Renoir during a visit to London.
Ray's first film, Pather Panchali, earned him a lot of accolades including the Best Human Document at the Cannes Film Festival. Some of his other world famous movies were, Apu Trilogy, Devi, Charulata, Kanchenjongha and Satranj Ke Khiladi. Besides film making, he had also written so many children’s short stories and novels that included popular characters, like Feluda, the Sleuth and Professor Shonku, the scientist in his science fictions
Considered as a Cultural Icon in India, Satyajit Ray is also said to have influenced several filmmakers around the world, including Martin Scorsese, James Ivory, François Truffaut and Carlos Saura. He received plenty of awards in his career, including India's highest civilian award "Bharat Ratna", 32 Indian National Film Awards, and an Academy Award in 1992. He passed away on April 23, 1992.
