Now Rail Ticket Reservation Through SMS

Wow! this is the only word that came in my mind when i heard about the railway ticket reservation through SMS. Indian Railways has now decided to start this exclusive service from the July month. Keeping an eye on the growing mobile phone market in the country, IRCTC will launch SMS-based ticketing from July 1 and a dedicated number will be announced soon for the same.

Talking about the step, a senior IRCTC official said that the step has been taken to participate in the save environment campaign as no print-out is required to avail this service. He further added that mobile- based booking will provide ease and convenience of booking tickets from anywhere and anytime. The ticketing message delivered on the mobile phone will be considered as valid during the journey.

To avail this exclusive service, customers have to register the mobile number with IRCTC as well as their bank. After the registration, the Bank will provide MMID (Mobile Money Identifier) and OTP (one time password) for authorization of payment.

SMS booking is very simple as a passenger has to only type the train number, destination, journey date, class and passenger details like name, age and gender on the SMS box and send it to the IRCTC.

Once the message is sent to the IRCTC, the sender will receive transaction ID and then they will have to make payment through sending another SMS by typing PAY followed by the transaction ID, MMID as received from the bank and password.

The service is available to all mobile subscribers at a marginal cost of Rs 3 per SMS, however, the payment gateway charge up to Rs 5000 is Rs 5 and Rs 10 for more than Rs 5000.

Google Commemorates the 161st Birth Anniversary of Julius Richard Petri

Today is the 161st birth anniversary of German bacteriologist, Julius Richard Petri. He was born on May 31, 1852 in Barmen and earned degree in medical science in the year 1876. In his career, Mr Petri had actively served as military physician till 1882. Moreover, he also worked at the Imperial Health Office in Berlin as an assistant.

Petri had immensely contributed in the invention and development of culture dish or Petri plate, a technique to culture bacteria on agar (a substance made from algae) plates that helped to identify the bacteria responsible for diseases. In the contemporary times, biologists use the Petri dish to culture cells. He died on December 20, 1921.

Today's Google doodle features six animated Petri dishes mopped by a hand to commemorate his birthday. When you hover mouse cursor on the plates it displays a sock, a door knob, a computer keyboard, a drooling dog, a plant in the rain and a dish being washed by a sponge.

Rupee Rises on 11 Month Low of 56.60 against US$

India is not going to recover earlier growth rate during the first quarter of financial year 2013-14 as the rupee hits 11 month low of 56.60 against US Dollar on Thursday. As per the market report, this is the fourth straight session of decline for the Indian currency, which has witnessed tremendous pressure amidst the strengthening of dollar.

Market experts have said that a sharp selloff in equities weighed on the currency, which traded at 56.47 against the dollar at 09.19 a.m. In addition, Sensex and Nifty also traded with over 0.6 per cent cut. Speculations are rife that the rupee is a cause of concern and it's very likely to hit an all-time low in coming days. In the extreme short term, the dollar looks overbought and a correction to 55.33 can be expected. However, a breach of 57.30 is just a matter of time after which the rupee will go all the way down to 59.

Talking about the current slowdown, D Subbarao, the governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has commented that inflation still being high and concerns over the current account gap dented rate cut hopes and pressured the currency. He further added that the RBI will take into account macro-economic factors and "more importantly" the current account deficit for policy decisions.
