Wow! this is the only word that came in my mind when i heard about the railway ticket reservation through SMS. Indian Railways has now decided to start this exclusive service from the July month. Keeping an eye on the growing mobile phone market in the country, IRCTC will launch SMS-based ticketing from July 1 and a dedicated number will be announced soon for the same.
Talking about the step, a senior IRCTC official said that the step has been taken to participate in the save environment campaign as no print-out is required to avail this service. He further added that mobile- based booking will provide ease and convenience of booking tickets from anywhere and anytime. The ticketing message delivered on the mobile phone will be considered as valid during the journey.
To avail this exclusive service, customers have to register the mobile number with IRCTC as well as their bank. After the registration, the Bank will provide MMID (Mobile Money Identifier) and OTP (one time password) for authorization of payment.
SMS booking is very simple as a passenger has to only type the train number, destination, journey date, class and passenger details like name, age and gender on the SMS box and send it to the IRCTC.
Once the message is sent to the IRCTC, the sender will receive transaction ID and then they will have to make payment through sending another SMS by typing PAY followed by the transaction ID, MMID as received from the bank and password.
The service is available to all mobile subscribers at a marginal cost of Rs 3 per SMS, however, the payment gateway charge up to Rs 5000 is Rs 5 and Rs 10 for more than Rs 5000.
